Less than five months until the band’s career-closing three-night run being billed as The Last Watusi (also at Tip’s), the Radiators returned for their last Anniversary shows at Tip’s, rounding out a multi-weekend celebration to recognize Tipitina’s 33rd Birthday. The organizer of the High Sierra Music Festival made the trek over to New Orleans for the shows to lend his support to the band that has been large part of HSMF for years, introducing and thanking them for their contributions to his festival and the world of music. Not knowing much about their music, their fans, or their history it was fun to see the night unfold as a blank slate. Walking into Tip’s, you could easily appreciate the importance of this run to both the band and the hordes of longtime fans that packed the house. The balconies and stage walls were draped in tapestries and kaleidoscopic projections painted quite the colorful scene for the multi-generational crowd. The standouts from set one were the take on “Morning Dew” and the extensive original “River Run”.  A good-time band generally attracts good-time people and it would be an understatement to point out that the (original) Fish Heads were in high spirits on Friday night seeing one of New Orleans classic acts playing one of only a handful of dates remaining in the Crescent City. I must add, Rads fans are some of the most congenial, good-natured, and rambunctious fans I’ve come across, some true veterans of the scene, respectful yet focused on the goal at hand, and that goal is to have as much fun as humanly possible as they watch their beloved band.

After set break, former member Glen “Kul” Sears was invited to the stage to sing lead vocals on “Out In The Woods”. The second set was just one big amalgam of The Radiators many facets, as the quintet showed off their many, many classic influences (The Allman Brothers Band and Little Feat immediately came to mind as well as Elvis Costello on some tunes). Guitarist Camile Baudoin was the undoubted show-stealer on this night, showing some downright insane chops and adding some serious textural depth and muscle to the Rads swamp rock sound. Two excellent covers of Talking Heads “Burning Down the House” and The Band’s “I Shall Be Released” came late in the game and impressed the hell out of the Radiators rookies in the crowd (i.e. yours truly and a few friends). The Rads far exceeded expectations, made at least one new fan, and it’s just a shame I didn’t get on board until it was almost too late. Better late than never I guess. luckily, there will be a few more chances for you and me to catch them in the city. The set list and remaining New Orleans dates are below.

4,500 shows and still cookin’…
