Hangout Music Festival 2011 Lineup
Only 190 miles and 107 days separate those in New Orleans from the 2nd Annual Hangout Music Festival, and this year’s edition is a massive step up from last year’s already strong debut lineup. Over the long weekend, you might get to see Paul Simon singing “Under African Skies” on the beach, Yim Yames playing “Golden” by the shore and maybe Primus doing Sailing Through the Seas of Cheese in it’s entirety, these things can all be yours for the price of a 3-day band (ok, the last one is a huge stretch). Judging by the lineup and setting, it looks like musical transcendence will not be in short supply come late-May in coastal Alabama.
This is some serious talent playing on a seriously cool stage, featuring many of my favorite vets of the live music universe at the top (MMJ, WP, Black Keys, Flaming Lips, Primus, Ween and Cee Lo Green to name a few). For most festivals, a lot of the excitement is generally in the mid-level talent but this year the heavy hitters are punching my ticket. This year’s lineup is about as good as I could’ve possibly imagined and as of yet, may serve as the platform My Morning Jacket to debut tracks off of their forthcoming sixth LP, which is reportedly being released in May. As of now, this this is the Louisville, KY band’s first scheduled show of the spring before headlining appearances at Wakarusa and Mountain Jam. As for local acts, Galactic and Trombone Shorty are on the initial lineup (with many more surely to be added), with a few of the big acts having strong ties to the New Orleans and Gulf Coast area. For example, Widespread Panic is a long-time staple at Jazz Fest, at UNO Lakefront Arena on Halloween, and the band (with the help of it’s fans built a house in the 9th Ward through Make It Right (“The House That Widespread Panic Fans Built“). Also, My Morning Jacket appeared at both Jazz Fest and Voodoo last year and the band played a show at Preservation Hall during last year’s Jazz Fest (filmed by Danny Clinch for a documentary). Should be a nice quaint gathering…
