Lissie w/ Dylan Leblanc @ House of Blues (Parish Room) – 2/8/11

A notably urbane and date-heavy crowd settled into the upstairs Parish Room at the as Shreveport native poured through a haunting, stripped-down set of sepia-toned originals. The majority of the crowd was seated before Leblanc delivered an emotive take on the archetypal Neil Young classic “Harvest Moon”, a song that Leblanc wore well, perhaps giving the tune an even more plaintive, autumnal hue than the original. Barely old enough to drink, Leblanc is a striking vocal talent, and the brief opening display revealed that the young artist’s future is brimming with potential upside. Like Ray Lamontagne, moments of levity in the live set were infrequent at best, and it will be interesting to see Leblanc perhaps explore a more colorful palette down the road (much like Lamontagne has done in recent years).

Next, a striking blonde in black pleather leggings, cowboy boots and a white blouse commanded the room’s attention, as Lissie took the Parish Room stage wielding a Fender guitar, flanked by a guitarist and bass/kickdrum dude (yes, he played both at once the entire show, a first in the history of the Parish Room? New Orleans? The World?). Although, far down the Missisippi from her riverside home town (Rock Island, IL), the room was decently-crowded room for a Tuesday night to watch the critically-acclaimed young singer play (Lissie was named Paste Magazine’s best new solo artist of 2010). Ms. Maurus opened her set with a bittersweet take on the Hank Williams original “Wedding Bells”, a tune Lissie recorded for her 2009 EP Why You Runnin’. Largely unfamiliar with her work until the show, Lissie’s earthy style and literate lyrical content had a hold on the largely-female bunch inched up by the stage, and the artista dipped her toes into Americana, folk, rock, and pop music at various times throughout the set.

Already having achieved a great deal of success in her career, Lissie still seems to be getting adjusted to playing less intimate rooms and carried on a conversational, congenial dialogue with fans between songs, which proved both refreshing and a touch frustrating at times when these banters pushed well past a minute or two. Regardless, it is clear why Lissie continues to prosper, as the easy-to-like artist wears her past struggles on her sleeve and delivers each verse with genuine and reflective emotion. It’s plain to see that Lissie is truly enjoying her recent growth in popularity while still moving ever closer to for her comfort zone with a full band on a larger stage.
