Just like our recurring Friday Jazz Fest Weekly Artist Spotlight, we will be featuring artists appearing at this May’s periodically with a few select videos, a little write-up and maybe a link or two if the band is making any big news at the time…

…And who better to start this series with than arguably the greatest live rock band of the 2000s (at least in my humble opinion): ? MMJ is a hot commodity on the festival circuit in 2011 and, in addition to their Hangout slot, will also be appearing at Wakarusa, Mountain Jam and assumedly at Bonnaroo as well (perhaps even as a headliner for the first time). The increasingly-less-grizzly quintet had a busy year in New Orleans this past year, recording with Preservation Hall Jazz Band, appearing at Preservation Hall (which was recorded for a documentary premiering at next month’s South-By-Southwest), headlining the Gentilly Stage at Jazz Fest 2010 and closing out the main stage on Halloween night at Voodoo (the band’s last show to date — next on schedule is Hangout Fest). The Louisville, KY rock band has announced that their 6th LP is scheduled for release in May, but details on a name and track listing are yet to be released. Therefore, unless an earlier date is announced in the meantime, The gulf side Hangout stage could serve as the platform for many of the songs to debut live.

My Morning Jacket is well-known for their live shows, generally 2 1/2-3 hour epics high on guitar-fueled energy, special occasion thematic weirdness, and explosive, operatic compositions dotting the night (see “Dondante” and “Steam Engine” for an example of that). MMJ is able to change gears on a dime and blanket the crowd in a swoony original like “Golden” after a deep funk track cover like Prince’s “I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man” and then shift back into overdrive with a jam band-ish rockout like “Lay Low”. Can think of few ways I would rather spend my time than seeing MMJ on the beach, at night, in temperate May weather conditions, should be one for the ages.

The many phases/faces of My Morning Jacket –

Classy – Gideon w/ The Boston Pops Orchestra (2006)

Recently, Hodges moved on to L.A. where Abita Beer is hard to find, costs about $6 if located and impromptu parading in the streets will most likely get you arrested on the spot.
