Anders Osborne and Friends SuperJam @ Tipitina’s – 2.26.11
Epic
As Anders Osborne continues to grow in stature and notoriety nationwide as one of the country’s most inspired guitar players, luckily for us, Osborne persists in the local manufacture of unthinkable, jaw-dropping nights of music on a monthly basis. The man has been on a warpath as of late and each local performance somehow manages to turn into a completely unique happening with different special guests, new covers, and a varied general vibe to the improvisations directions taken by Osborne and his bandmates for the night (this is the fourth time I’ve seen Osborne since Voodoo and the fourth different band set-up – the man is a musical chameleon).
When I caught wind earlier in the week that George Porter Jr. and John Gros were going to join in the fray and make this a proper SuperJam, I knew we were in for a sizeable mini-Gras treat. Anders Osborne, recognized recently at Offbeat magazine’s “Best of the Beat” awards as the city’s best axeman, continues to tread a path of expectation destruction each night out and when he’s partnered with bearded kindred spirit Carl Dufrene, magic unfolds, it’s a sight to see, and blown minds are left in the wake.
Lubriphonic put on a helluva opening set (both nights at Tip’s this weekend featured excellent supporting acts – last night was Asheville, NC’s Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band) before Anders and friends took the stage around midnight. “Burning on the Inside”, “Iko Iko” and “Sugaree” all stand out as vivid highlights from yet another atmosphere-bending performance from the local legend who’s star continues to shine brighter with each new exceptionally unique event. You never know what kind of performance you’re gonna get with this guy (last time it was power blues trio, Voodoo was jamfunk and this…I’m kind of at a loss for words to describe this) and that’s what keeps us coming back each night.
Anders will be playing next at The Howlin Wolf (FREE SHOW) w/ Kermit Ruffins this Friday, March 4th. Don’t miss it.
