Bingham never let you believe it was a Tuesday night

It is not often that an opening act alone is worth the price of admission. Last night, Ryan Bingham’s opener, The Silent Comedy met this mark. A folk band that isn’t afraid to unleash their inner rock star, this San Diego quintet took the stage with the aggression of a garage band playing its first show. With songs about prohibition, the dust bowl, and other slices of Americana, the conjured up sepia-toned vestiges of past eras with lyrical and technical prowess.

Containing several multi-instrumentalists and led by brothers Jeremiah and Joshua Zimmerman, Silent Comedy’s members took turns on the guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass, and keyboards throughout the set. Despite being on the road for two months already, the group rocked the stage with the vigor and energy of an 11 year old on Halloween. As the encore neared, sweat dripped from banjoist Justin Buchanan’s handlebar mustache while he scaled the speakers to play from a higher perch and the guitarist was doing behind-the-head solos and the keyboardist was screaming at the top of his lungs despite the absence of a microphone. Truly a site to be seen. Notably, lead vocalist Josh Zimmerman (who bears a striking resemblance to Russell Brand’s character Alduous Snow of Infant Sorrow), kept the act together while never letting the energy die down. Finally, Zimmerman took the microphone into the crowd below to finish the set from within the crowd. Anyone who plans on catching one of Bingham’s last few shows of this tour should make sure to show up in time for the Silent Comedy’s unique performance.

Ryan Bingham also didn’t disappoint. Known best for solemn, passionate studio versions of his songs, he kept the music loud and the crowd moving during his live act. Bingham began with a series of songs that showcased his acoustic talent including “Depression”, “Tell My Mother I Miss Her So”, and “The Other Side.” These songs allowed the versatility of the lead guitarist/slide/mandolinist Corby Schaub of the Dead Horses to shine. However, it wasn’t long before Bingham switched to electric and took over the role of primary instrumentalist. Starting with a two-minute solo on “Hard Times,” he picked up the show and never let down. During the encore, Bingham showed his slide guitar prowess, moving from “Sunshine” into “Bread & Water” while the lights flashed in the background as the crowd yelled lyrics over the dueling guitars.

Bingham never let you believe it was a Tuesday night. The crowd was thick, the music was loud, and the playing was on point. It is nights like these that make me proud of the musical diversity we can see in New Orleans.
