ANNOUNCED: A 2nd Original Meters Appearance This Summer @ San Fran Outside Lands Fest

The Original Meters - Appearing at SF in Aug.

Now in addition to the Bonnaroo performance alongside Dr. John and Allen Toussaint (where the band will perform Desitively Bonnaroo), the original METERS lineup will perform at this year’s Outside Lands festival alongside the indie-jam-hard rock power trio of monster headliners including Arcade Fire (Jazz Fest ’11), Phish & Muse (Voodoo ’10). The festival will take place from August 12-14 in San Fran’s Golden Gate Park. For more information about the fest, go here.

Fittingly, NOLA born/NYC-bred festival producers Superfly Presents are using The Meters “Funkify Your Life” to introduce the lineup —

Finally, here’s the fest’s full lineup —

About the author

Wesley grew up in coastal Georgia and is a former resident of The Music City and The Big Easy where he helped get LMB NOLA off-the-ground after launching in January 2011. Over the past few years, he has also contributed steadily to JamBase and Relix Magazine. Recently, Hodges moved on to L.A. where Abita Beer is hard to find, costs about $6 if located and impromptu parading in the streets will most likely get you arrested on the spot.

Girl Talk gets higer billing than the METERS? What kind of Festival is this? Why can’t Quint or anyone else in NOLA get the Meters back together for a show where people know their music (since 2006)? These are my questions, and now I demand answers.

All about the Benjamins. The more your appearance fee is, the higher your name lists. Still an injustice in cases like this. The Meters were a huge influence on festival headliners Phish, past headliners Widespread Panic and basically any band that ever put a funk track on wax, tape, 8-track, c.d. or hard drive. Superfly is showcasing them at their other big event (Bonnaroo) this year as one of the main attractions – Although, check out the lineup vid, at least they are getting some credit there. Regardless of where there name appears on a poster, I know where I’ll be if I’m at Outside Lands.

Also, Gregg Allman at Bonnaroo is listed below Scissor Sisters, Girl Talk, Bassnectar (seriously?!) and Pretty Lights – such are the times we live in.

As for Jazz Fest, not quite sure how Bonnaroo and Outside Lands got priority for a reunion over the home town gig, but I’m guessing Superfly has developed an excellent relationship with the Meters camp given all the Jazz Fest late nights and Bonnaroo appearances over the years. Also, bigger assumed budget and money talks.

Wow, this response got really long, hope it was informative Kush.

I understand it’s about the dolla, dolla bills, Weasley. However, it makes no sense that Quint couldn’t get a cut-rate since every member of the Meters is going to be playing during Jazz Fest weekend. George, Art, Zig, and Leo are all around the area for at least two weeks – does that not encourage them to get it done or are their schedules already too jammed up during Fess time?

The overwhelmingly joy-inducing Meters show in ’06 got overlooked because they played opposite of Springsteen, in what may have been the greatest 2 hours of my Fest lifetime. The pure happiness emanating from the crowd when they cranked up Hey Pocky Way after the scheduled 7 p.m. closing time made me realize how badly I wanted to move back to NO after college.

Ok, my post is long too. Just bring The Meters home and I’ll shut up.
