The Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson and his new psychedelic western-rock outfit stopped in this week at Tipitina’s for a Tuesday night gig, only a few shows into their massive 50 date national tour. First and foremost, the band is great – George Sluppick (formerly of MOFRO, Robert Walter’s 20th Congress) is a hard-driving beast on the kit who, along with Muddy Dutton (Bass – Burning Tree, L.A. Guns) keeps the music clean and moving. Neal Casal (Ryan Adams and the Cardinals) and Adam MacDougall (The Black Crowes) handle the guitar and keyboard leads respectively. On Tuesday night, Mr. Robinson himself wielded the axe, knocking out some pretty solid six string work in his own right (don’t worry – he still has enough enough room for his signature wiggle…). Much like bands such as Little Feat and The Black Crowes before them, this group embodies the vibe of the great “west coast southern rock” bands that have shaped the genre for years – 1970′s rock & roll is very much a huge influence on them and they take that and turn it into a whole new sound based around Robinson’s still sharp and thoroughly engaging songwriting.

The band eased the loose Tip’s crowd into the freakness with two bluesy opening numbers before really launching into space with “Star Or Stone”, a wandering ballad that settled into some extended, airy guitar work from Casal and Robinson. They touched back down to earth with their gospel-twang take on Delaney and Bonnie’s “Poor Elijah-Tribute To Johnny” (a song The Crowes did for a while), a tune suiting Robinson’s vocal range and melodic abilities perfectly. However, the highlight of the set was undoubtedly the bouncy groove of “Rosalie”, a roaring CRB original that closed out the first half and had the people swinging and moving like it was Saturday night. It is really nice to hear Chris’s solo stuff with new life and energy at the hands of the new band, and taking in the fact that it took Chris almost no time to put this thing together after the second hiatus of the Crowes – you know they want to be out here on the road and this enthusiasm translates into an emphatic performance on stage.

The band took an honest 30 minute setbreak before returning around 11:30 with “40 Days”, one of the few New Earth Mud (a prior Chris Robinson solo outfit) songs that have found their way into the Brotherhood’s setlists. After taming some balcony beer spillers, the band slid into a woozy cover of Garcia / Hunter’s “They Love Each Other.” Robinson has always openly been a big fan of The Grateful Dead’s music, and this tune is a great fit for their sound (one of a few Dead covers in rotation). Another real highlight of the second set was the sonic trio of “Vibration & Light Suite, Ride -> I Ain’t Hidin’” to anchor down an already solid show. After that barrage, the band ended with James Moore’s “Got Love If You Want It” and after nearly 180 minutes of Rock & Roll music – they left the stage, boarded the bus, and rolled out down Napoleon Ave.

They are at the Workplay Theatre in Birmingham, AL tonight and will be at the second coming of the fabulous Georgia Theatre Friday night. Do yourself a favor if you’re in the area and hit it up.
