We’ve Got Another Night

Last night at One Eyed Jack’s the young folks came out en masse to catch a glimpse of two profoundly different takes on Americana and country-tinged rock music. With apologies to New Grass Country Club, who had already finished up their set by the time we arrived, J. Roddy Walston & The Business seemed to leave a lasting impression on the crowd, many of whom came to see the night’s headliners and the chirps were loud from those raving about their short and aggressively impassioned opening set. The piano-driven, barroom approach of J. Roddy Walston & The Business was in stark contrast to the FUTUREBIRDS, who moved from straight-laced DBT-style Southern rock on “Battle For Rome” to a soundwall-building Explosions in the Sky-leaning collage of steel, banjo, and heavily delayed and layer guitar effects. These multi-peak expositions appeared at numerous points during the set, until the band surrendered any remaining self-control, letting loose during the show closing “Ski Chalet”. Simple Play Presents put together a great occasion for the youthful working crowd to get to the Quarter and catch a rare twin bill of this caliber before the two bands hit Houston and Austin City Limits the rest of the week. For that we are grateful (and tired).
