PREVIEW: Bonobo @ The Hookah – Thurs., 10/6

Bonobo @ The Hookah - 10/6
British DJ/producer Bonobo will be returning to New Orleans next month for a show at The Hookah on Thursday, October 6th. Bonobo combines his studio wizardry into the live show pretty well, adapting his signature sound into something more attuned to the live stage than the headphones-worthy downtempo grooves you’ll hear on his records. Tickets and more info are available here. Caught the live band show last November at Republic and will jump at the chance to see what the DJ is up to (and because that brought out one of the more interesting crowds I’ve seen in NOLA). Black Sands was one of the best records of 2010 and I haven’t had the chance to see a show at The Hookah (just a block over from HoB) so it’s good to see him already coming back to NOLA.
More info on Bonobo:
An accomplished musician by the age of 18, Bonobo (Simon Green), left his home of rural Hampshire for Brighton where he fell into the jazz/hip hop/funk/soul scene. He quickly started producing his own tracks. His first release came on Luis’ label, Tru Thoughts, and his track “Terrapin” was included on the compilation “When Shapes Join Together” in 1999. His debut album, Animal Magic followed the next year, completely self-produced and largely self-played, too. Hailed as one of the “new downtempo pioneers,” Green found himself attracting the attention of other labels and eventually signed to Ninja Tune.
Over the years Green’s has develeped an incredibly lush an full sound that he incorporates into his live show and on his recordings. His latest release Black Sands was named as the Best Artist Album by DJ Magazine and received rave reviews from critics, with Pop Matters saying tha tthe album presents “…. an unprecedented level of richness in texture that discerning listeners can parse over multiple listens.”
