PREVIEW: Bela Fleck and the Flecktones @ House of Blues – 10/11/11

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones @ House of Blues New Orleans - 10/11/11
Cruisin’ in 11/8
WHO: The Original Lineup of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones (Bela Fleck, Howard Levy, Futureman and Victor Wooten)
WHEN: Tuesday, October 11th at 8:00 p.m.
WHERE: House of Blues New Orleans, 225 Decatur St.
WHY:: The Original lineup of the Flecktones reformed recently for the first time in nearly two decades, putting out the band’s first album of new material in six years with Rocket Science. Piano/harmonica virtuoso Howard Levy (aka “The Man With Two Brains”) steps back into the band, filling the void left by sax man Jeff Coffin, who has had his hands-full on the road as a full-time touring member of the Dave Matthews Band. The mad scientist percussionist Roy “Futureman” Wooten and one of the greatest living bassists Victor Wooten continue to round out the dazzlingly talented outfit, one that continues to evade apt categorization. Finally, there’s the frontman on the banjo, a lifetime musician who has expanded the old-timey instrument for decades with his seemingly endless musical palette and sense of curiosity. Fleck’s wanderlust for musical exploration has taken him and his instrument all over the planet (most notably to Africa where he recorded the acclaimed record Throw Down Your Heart – Africa Sessions Part 2) and has helped him rake in 8 GRAMMY Awards along the way (including 4 with the Flecktones). The talent on display in the House of Blues on Tuesday night will be stratospheric, even by New Orleans standards.
