Mardi Gras Indian Orchestra – Live in New Orleans by livemusicnola

This recording of the Mardi Gras Indian Orchestra takes place on Mardi Gras day, 2011 at the Hi Ho Lounge in New Orleans’ 9th Ward. The performance brings together an all star cast of local favorites to offer a fresh interpretation on music steeped in tradition. Bruce ‘SunPie’ Barnes, Big Chief of the Northside Skull and Bones Gang, delivers traditional call and response rhythmic chants and leads the band through classic Mardi Gras songs in full skeleton dress. The New Orleans style drumming of Kevin O’Day and Afro/Cuban hand percussion of Rosie Rosato form a tight pocket, while the rhythm section (featuring Reggie and Camile of the Radiators, Sam Hotchkiss of Juice!, and CR Gruver) blends a distinctly funky element into the mix. Violinist Harry Hardin and Cellist Hellen Gillet contribute gorgeous string accompaniment and inspired improvised solos alongside venerable jazz saxophonist Tim Green. Altogether the band is a diverse collection of backgrounds and styles, but they merge seamlessly into a unified musical expression. This is the sound of today’s generation carrying on the promise of New Orleans.

Wesley grew up in coastal Georgia and is a former resident of The Music City and The Big Easy where he helped get LMB NOLA off-the-ground after launching in January 2011. Over the past few years, he has also contributed steadily to JamBase and Relix Magazine. Recently, Hodges moved on to L.A. where Abita Beer is hard to find, costs about $6 if located and impromptu parading in the streets will most likely get you arrested on the spot.
