The popular Texas-born, New York City-based DJ Jonathan Toubin has long had an association with New Orleans. His “Soul Clap” vinyl 45 dance party, with which he’s toured nationally, took inspiration in part from New Orleans’ own 11-year-old monthly Mod Dance Party. In the early 2000’s, he released records by New Orleans acts like MC Trachiotomy, Static Static and Microshards on his New York Night Train label.

Most interestingly, in 2006, Toubin recorded and transcribed several long interviews with New Orleans musicians, including Trachiotomy and Quintron, who had remained in the upper Ninth Ward neighborhood for the first, frightening days after Hurricane Katrina. (The interviews remain up on the New York Night Train website.)

December 8, 2011, Toubin suffered a horrific and bizarre accident when a taxi drove through the wall of the Jupiter Hotel in Portland, Oregon, landing on top of him as he slept. According to the Oregonian, a month later Toubin remains hospitalized in a Portland hospital’s intensive care unit.

Friends and colleagues nationwide have set up a Facebook page for updates on his condition as well as information about multiple benefit concerts planned by his many friends in the music community to help defray mounting medical costs.
This week, several New Orleanians, many of whom told Toubin their stories in 2006, announced a two-night local benefit show, featuring , MC Trachiotomy, , King Louie’s Missing Monuments, Microshards, Bipolaroid, multiple DJs and a raffle.

The shows will take place Friday, January 20 and Saturday, January 21 at , 2227 St. Claude Ave. For more information, visit the event’s Facebook page.
