REVIEW / PHOTOS: James Hall and Mystery Girl @ Carrollton Station – 2/3/12

Thanks to Steven Hatley for contributing this review.

For the first time in over a year, James Hall was back in town to play Carrollton Station with longtime friend and collaborator Michael Blum who supplied support on lap steel. Opening the night was Blum’s newest project, (Josh Katz – Lead Vocals, Mike Blum – Lead Guitar/Lap Steel, Nate Peek – Bass, Nino Mazzaro – Acoustic Guitar, and Steve Gopaul – Drums). When they took the stage the first thing that went through my head was RRRROOOOOOOOOOORRRRR!!!!!, but in life and music you can’t judge a book by a cover, anchored by Blum’s steel and guitar, Mystery Girl cruised through ten tracks of pleasantness. A pinch of country, rock, and folk rounded out the sound. The opening set served as the perfect compliment to Hall’s set.

James has never really left New Orleans, if will always be in his blood. There is a passion for the city in his lyrics and a presence of grace in every track he rolls through. James’ set was a combination of James and Blume (marked by # on the set list), James solo (##), and James with a full band of friends (### – Bruce Butkovich – Bass, Blume – steel and guitar, and Brian Berthiaume – Drums).

When the full band joined James on stage it was as if they had been playing for years. Raw and passion are among the terms that resonated in my mind when the band was operating at its highest form. The last song of the night was an outright anthem to New Orleans and the city’s struggles. Beautiful chaos is the best way to describe it, purely amazing.

That’s quite a setlist James. Bet it was an incredible show, so glad to see you are playing live.
