It’s hard to believe that 20 years ago It’s A Shame about Ray was released. In celebration of this anniversary, Evan Dando’s latest incarnation of is on tour playing the LP in its entirety. The current band includes Devon Ashley on drums and Vess Ruhtenburg on bass. Vess was also one of the night’s openers after locals The Lovey Dovies, performing before Meredith Sheldon.

Vess’s set was short, mostly comprised of material on his EP (with a random cover thrown in) performed entirely on acoustic guitar. He enjoyed himself on stage and the audience responded warmly to his enthusiasm. Next came Meredith Sheldon who was previously a member of the Ben Taylor Band and Family of the Year. She took the stage to a projection of her EP cover art and played a song before being joined by her band. As expected her set was comprised mostly of the material on the EP. Sheldon’s presence reflected artist comfortable in her own skin and very much at home on stage. The Boston alum proclaimed it was her first time in New Orleans and the audience gave her a proper welcome applause. Sheldon’s set was also short, but undoubtedly displayed the polish of a seasoned vet.

As for the night’s marquee attraction, Evan took the stage with an acoustic guitar to play a few tunes before the all out onslaught of Ray, putting out slacker power pop in all its excellence. The background projection was a travelogue of sorts, featuring snippets of driving/road shots and birds as a visual accompaniment to the music. “Alison”, “Kitchen”, and “Drug Buddy” garnered the highest praises of the set. Evan was feeding off the crowd and the crowd wasn’t hesitant to return the energy. The crowd was amazing, singing along to every song. After Evan finished playing “Frank Mills” solo electric he left the stage in true rock star fashion, then promptly returned, saying he felt he had to leave the stage so everyone would know Ray was done. Dando then proceeded to play another acoustic set which was comprised of a couple covers by Elvis and Lucinda Williams as well as one of his most well known classics, “Into You Arms.”

The night seemed to go on forever, and the audience didn’t even seem to mind. It’s not often you get to see a true rock genius on stage genuinely enjoying every moment of the show. After Evan’s second acoustic set he was joined by the band again. “Great Big No” and “Big Gay Heart” got big responses. In the end, Evan and Co. played close to 40 songs, never showing signs of wanting to let up. In the end, Dando thanked the crowd several times before leaving the stage. See the set list from the show below.
