DANCE TO THE RHYTHMS AT CONGO SQUARE

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation has announced their 5th annual Congo Square New World Rhythms Festival, a FREE 2-day event that will include a festival, symposium, major brass band challenge and a slew of surrounding events. This year’s event goes down March 24th and 25th.

WHEN: March 24–25, 2012 – 11:00 a.m. to 7:15 p.m. both days
WHERE: Congo Square – Louis Armstrong Park @ 901 N. Rampart Street
ADMISSION: FREE!

Newly reopened after years of post-Katrina repair, Armstrong Park will come alive with the sounds of the African Diaspora. Admission is free. Performers trace the voyage of the music born in New Orleans:

– From the Congo will be soukous guitar master Diblo Dibala and legendary drummer Titos Sompa.
– From Cuba comes the 13-piece salsa/hip-hop band Interactivo.
– Honduran-via-New Orleans singer Fredy Omar will represent more Latin music, as will the high-energy .
– The flavors of New Orleans emerge with our own dance and drumming groups, such as Kumbuka, Africa Brass, Moyuba and .

It all culminates with New Orleans’ explosive versions of the ancient rhythms, with the , a conscious hip-hop summit of Dee-1, Truth Universal and Nesby Phips and a giant jam session of the Grammy-winning , New Orleans “bounce” pioneers Partners-In-Crime and DJ Jubilee and special guests.

Additionally, there’ll also be a huge arts market, including the Sankofa Farmers Market, and prepared food vendors including Li’l Dizzy’s, Jazzy Wings, Woody’s Fish Tacos and Dunbar’s Creole Restaurant.

At 10 a.m. on March 24th the Foundation will explore the history of New Orleans culture with the fourth annual Tom Dent Congo Square Symposium at the Joy Theater. Between Heaven and Earth: Soothing the Troubled Soul With the Arts of our Ancestors will feature Yale professor Robert Farris Thompson along with former National Endowment for the Humanities chairman William Ferris, and panel discussion of artist-healers moderated by American Routes host Nick Spitzer. Admission to these events is free. See: www.CongoSquareTalks.info.

On Saturday, March 24, at 7 p.m., the Foundation’s Jazz Journey concert series presents a dance event, “The Rhythms of Congo Square” featuring Titos Sompa with Kumbuka, Casa Samba and other troupes.

Treme Brass Band

The Foundation will also present Got Brass? A High School Brass Band Competition. On Sunday, March 25, we’ll hold the finals in the form of a second-line from Armstrong Park. Celebrity judges including Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews, Shamarr Allen, Sammie Williams of Big Sam’s Funky Nation will award $20,000 worth of instruments to middle and high school band programs.
