Concert Recap: Built To Spill @ One Eyed Jacks – 3/9/12

Being an opening band always has its troubles. “Will anyone show up?” Or, if the room fills out by the time the act takes the stage, will they pay attention? The one thing garage rock band Junebug Spade had going for it was the fact they were opening a sold out show. The Oklahoma natives powered through 8 tracks in record time, never leaving the somewhat dense crowd unpleased.

Filling out the middle slot of the lineup was the New York based quartet, Dinosaur Feathers. Their sound is a blend of folk and noise. With the addition of a drummer, replacing a drum machine, the band has completely evolved their sound from their 2010 debut album, Fantasy Memorial. The set was a well-balanced funfest of material from that album and their forthcoming venture, Whistle Tips. The band really seemed to enjoy themselves on stage. By the time they went on the crowd had thickened up quite a bit.

The night concluded with an onslaught of indie-jam magic. Built to Spill are by no means a jam band though, but do enjoy the occasion to extend their tunes with severe pedal action. It seemed like there were over a dozen effect petals at foot, each having their own purpose, lending to that unique Built to Spill sound. he crowd was charged and gave back every bit of energy they received. Dough was on target, like a well-oiled machine, ripping through their vast catalogue. The set wasn’t peppered with the hits, but more in tune with fan favorites. The last song of the encore, “Conventional” was anything but namesake, a 20 minute journey, showcasing the immense talent of the band.
