Chris Lyons and Au Ras Au Ras Show Poster || Hey! Cafe - 4/7/12

Not realizing where the performance was to take place after walking into the tiny coffee shop, I had a quick exchange with the barista at the counter:

Me: “So where’s the show?”
Barista: “You can go through there and sit on the steps or any of the chairs.”
Me: “Ok, thanks.”

So I proceed through the small hallway into another room not too much bigger than my living room. Nothing had been set up yet, so there was a bit of mystery afoot as to where the band was going to set up. Quaint is an understatement to describe the space, think a smaller Circle Bar. When the bands set up their gear it took up about half of the room.

Opener Chris Lyons set up off to the side of the room for his one-man band set. A Pennsylvania transplant, 21 year old Chris admits that the New Orleans life is quite a bit different, but “not as cold.” As he started to play, he remarked on the intimate setting, saying it was just like he was playing in his bedroom. There’s an old soul springing from Lyons’ lungs, you can hear it in every verse he sings. The haunting echoes that come from his guitar escape apt description. Throwing in the harmonica, you’d think he did it before Dylan; it was just another part of the folk machine. Chris ended his set with the title track from Dead Dog Drowning (September 2011)

(pronounced “oh rah oh rah”) consists of former Deadboy & the Elephantmen drummer Tess Brunet, who now helms the guitar and keyboard. Accompanying Brunet was Patrick Hodgkins on bass and Pat Fee on drums. Au Ras Au Ras’s sound combines of folk and 50’s-toned reverb, with a healthy smattering of Mazzy Star’s signature sound. The music is introspective, stark and lonely at times, which make sense, lending itself to the fact that Brunet prefers to record way out in the sticks, in Water Valley, MS. The small room only enhanced the listening experience. Au Ras Au Ras’ set was a combination of new tracks* and tracks from the self-titled 2011 debut. The new material will probably end up on Tess’ next album of which she will be recording this month, back in Mississippi.
