PHOTOS / FULL SET VIDEO: The Flaming Lips @ Hangout Fest 2012

The roving carnival phenomenon that have become in the 2nd half of their career has been a stalwart of the major global festival circuit over the last decade since the release of Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (nearing a 10th Anniversary – Released on July 17, 2002). While generally sticking to a trusted (albeit very loose) formula of hamster balls, dancing robots/teletubbies/naked chicks/santas/you name it, lasers, confetti and extremely powerful visuals, the effusive master of ceremonies and always-effervescent seems most at home playing to a massive crowd on a major festival stage, possessing a knack for making patrons feel like they are an active, vital component in the participatory mayhem The Flaming Lips tirelessly seek to create.

For Hangout Fest, the band came out guns blazing with The Soft Bulletin-opening “Race for the Prize”, and, after hitting several highlights from their vast catalog, offered up their altered reading on Pink Floyd’s timeless classic Dark Side of the Moon (replete with actual eclipse). Lucky for you, me and the Internet at-large, Ali & Mike Kerr were on the beach to capture the magic and the entire show’s house feed still exists on YouTube (ain’t technology just the best?!). Later this month (6/28 to be exact), The Flaming Lips will (hopefully) return (if they make it) to New Orleans for the first time since their set at the 2009 Voodoo Experience, to play the final show of their wild-eyed attempt to break Jay-Z’s Guiness Book record for Most Concerts in 24 Hours with an already sold out show at House of Blues. If you want to relive the Hangout Sunday experience in full continue below, enjoy the videos and scroll through the extensive gallery. Ya dig?

Wesley grew up in coastal Georgia and is a former resident of The Music City and The Big Easy where he helped get LMB NOLA off-the-ground after launching in January 2011. Over the past few years, he has also contributed steadily to JamBase and Relix Magazine. Recently, Hodges moved on to L.A. where Abita Beer is hard to find, costs about $6 if located and impromptu parading in the streets will most likely get you arrested on the spot.
