CONCERT RECAP: Guided by Voices plus Detective @ One Eyed Jacks – 9/22/12

Words and photos by Steve Hatley

A couple things to immediately note about my past Saturday experience: Firstly, I am a casual fan. My knowledge of the band is mostly off the albums Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes, as well as their new material released this year, Let’s Go Eat the Factory and Class Clown Spots a UFO. To say Robert Pollard is prolific would be a massive understatement. He’ll be releasing two more GBV albums, one later on this year and another in March of 2013. Secondly, this will go down as one of the drunkest, smokiest shows I have ever had the pleasure to attend. The participation, from both the audience and from the band itself, was ecstatic. Good thing I knew the history of the headlining band and their fans prior to going in, or else I might have been a bit shocked and pissed that I was used as a punching bag all night.

Los Angeles-based , which consists of James Greer (ex-Guided By Voices) on guitar, and Guylaine Vivarat (ex-Useless Keys) on bass, and Chris Dunn on drums, had the daunting task of opening to the near capacity crowd. One major advantage of going on an hour and thirty minutes after the doors open is the likelihood of a full house to which the band took major advantage of by feeding off the house energy. The band is best described as a power garage outfit with hints of The Pixies and, obviously, Guided by Voices.  Detective played a tight forty minute set.  The last song of the set, “Trendspotter,” was a track James had written for GBV back when he played with them. With this, the crowd responded very kindly and carried the eruptive enthusiasm right into GBV’s set.

One thing any fan of Guided by Voice knows about a GBV set is that the show is a marathon and not a sprint, even if some of the tracks clock in at two minutes or less. The forty four song set included three encores, and all the while the beer and the smoking were all part of the game, one big party on stage and off. About a quarter of the way through the set, Robert proclaimed, “This is the second coming of Guided by Voices.” The crowd went nuts, and without missing a beat we continued the sing-along to every anthem that defined the night. At one point during the show, Robert actually forgot the lyrics to one of his songs, but like a trooper, and two false starts, he was back in business. Robert told the story of his Letterman appearance and the fact that he played a song rooted in New Orleans lore, “The Unsinkable Fats Domino.” In the third encore, Robert brought up their tour manager to sing background vocals and proclaimed it was the only song he knew by them. The night ended with crowd favorite, “Motor Away,” which turned into a huge party on stage, with the audience and band existing as one.

The quote of the night came via a twitter comment by Chris Boyd, “Before tonight, I *liked* Guided by Voices. I walked out of One Eyed Jacks absolutely blown away, now I *love* Guided by Voices.”
