CONCERT RECAP: Dinosaur Jr. plus Shearwater @ Tipitina’s Uptown – 10/3/12

Loud, powerful, and controlled chaos was the thoughts of the night. As I stood there snapping my shots, all I kept thinking to myself was, “It’s J freaking Mascus.” I am a bit ahead of myself.

The night started off with indie/noise/grunge/psych rock outfit . The five piece band from Austin did their best to entertain the sparse crowd at hand. As the set progressed and the audience thickened, the band seemed to find their strides. It is always hard to open for any band and even more stressful when that band is beyond epic, but Shearwater took to that task and never wavered, leaving the crowd pleasantly happy and properly teased for the main event.

has been around since the 80’s, and Tipitina’s was gracious enough to have the original line-up. Their sound has evolved greatly since the early days of grunge into episodic musically journeys and extremely loud bliss. To say the crowd thrived on the older material would be an understatement at best, the newer stuff just didn’t garner the same response that the older material did. I think upon further listening to I Bet Sky, they would have a different view; it’s one of my top 20 albums of 2012. The set was a great mix of their entire cataloged, but was missing tracks from Farm. “Out There” running into “Feel the Pain” got the best crowd response of the night. It was like they were living the lyrics. As the night went on, the near capacity crowd settled in and gave back every bit of energy the band was feeding them. An enormous eruption went through the crowd as the first notes of “Start Choppin’” were played. It was an almost primal response and I completely understood where it was coming from. Toward the end of the set, J joked they were playing their ballad and launched into a blistering no holds barred cover of “Training Ground’ from J’s previous band, Deep Wound. Two songs later and the main set were done. The band returned to the stage to do a three song audience request encore which ended with their rambunctious cover of The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven.”

J and band are whole lot older and wiser than their younger day. Their music has stood the test of time and their new material has found a place in this new world of rock. Loud, powerful, and controlled chaos was the thoughts of the night and Dinosaur Jr. did not disappoint by any stretch of the imagination.
