CONCERT RECAP: M83 plus Sun Airway @ House of Blues – 10/9/12

So the night finally came where we hooligans were lucky enough to witness the bright-light glory that is , and I couldn’t think of a better setting that the intimate confines of the here in New Orleans. But before we could get into the green laser-fingers of European weirdness, we had ourselves a fine taste of Tuesday’s Philadelphia-based indie rockers, . These guys had plenty of energy, and although there seemed to be a bit on the strong side of string-based synth, the opening band’s set did a great job of getting all the ladies and gents into light-camera-action mode (oh, and by the “light” part, I mean a tidal wave of flashing and pulsing lights that would soon accompany each beat of M83’s set – to put it frankly, there were signs posted around the venue warning the patrons of heavy strobes).

Earlier that day, we were all issued a notice instructing the fine citizens of New Orleans to refrain from drinking the water; well, that was just fine on Tuesday night, because we didn’t plan on drinking much water, anyway. Why? Because it was M83 time, and all of that desire for a midweek party came to fruition as the strange and distinguished creature approached the front of the stage with fingers drawn to the horizon while mesmerizing green lasers shot like infinity from its fingers. (See featured image at the top).

The band kicked things off with “Intro,” as the vocals blasted to us to “carry on, carry,” certainly a captivating way of advising us of the musical journey ahead. Immediately the lights went into big bang mode, with the set up on stage flashing maniacally like a set of The Price Is Right on ecstasy, and what could only be gigantic vats of golden honey sound began to fall upon us in droves.

The crowd was riding the waves of psychedelic life, and proving so with their ceaseless vibrant cheers, welcoming this act as though it were some sort of joyous Event Horizon. Within this dense bouncing of flesh and fun, we set sail on our Viking ship into the soundscapes of light speed. And onward we went, eager to sound off our enormous applause to the deserving members of M83, who could not have brought a better amount of energy to the House of Blues. Ultimately, even though the set seemed to end a bit too soon, it left us floating in the firmamental bliss of musical hypnosis, and for that we are wholly grateful.

Enjoy the pictures!
