CONCERT RECAP: Trampled by Turtles @ Tipitina’s Uptown 10/10/12

As I walked out of my apartment en route to my first Trampled by Turtles show, a roving gang of bluegrass bikers pedaled by my place, shouting to the streets that the Turtles would be taking the stage in less than 30 minutes. Given that kind of grass-roots promotion, I knew I had better high tail it down to the corner of Tchoup and Napoleon. When I arrived, the bikers and a plethora of other bluegrass enthusiasts crowded the stage in preparation for what would be a dynamic performance. As a casual bluegrass fan, I expected a fast-paced and spirited show. What I got was a tireless whirlwind of high-octane, string-picking, fiddle-sawing bliss that proved you don’t need a drum set to bring down the house at Tipitina’s.

The Turtles spread the NOLA love by opening with “New Orleans,” letting the crowd know that the band was indeed aware of its surroundings. The lyrics lamet, “It’s a bitch ain’t it babe/To live while you’re young,” but Wednesday’s crowd seemed quite pleased to live life to the fullest regardless of age. The 19 song set drew heavily from the band’s two latest releases, Palomino and Stars and Satellites, but occasionally ventured into deeper fan favorites such as “Codeine” and “Still in Love With You.” Rarely breaking between songs, Duluth’s Turtles held court with a blistering pace that rarely allowed the crowd a chance to catch its collective breath. “Wait So Long,” the band’s penultimate tune, was a personal highlight and really allowed the Turtles to show off their dizzying pace and unrelenting energy.

What’s interesting about Trampled by Turtles’ past is that they are not born and bred blue-grassers. Rather, the middle aged mutant bluegrass turtles arose from the sewers of rock and roll. The band actually came to fruition because the now-members wanted a break from their respective rock and roll outfits and felt the urge to try their hands at acoustic instruments. Fast forward nearly a decade and the Turtles are entrenched as bluegrass royalty – yet their rock and roll roots certainly seep through during live performances. As a result, a rock and roll showmanship and swagger permeates the act and propels the turtles past the normal boundaries of a bluegrass show. The only thing lacking from the setlist was a killer cover, but you’ll just have to catch them next time they come through for that.
