CONCERT RECAP / SETLIST: Menomena @ One Eyed Jack’s 10/5/12

CONCERT RECAP / SETLIST: Menomena @ One Eyed Jack's 10/5/12

When took the stage around midnight at One Eyed Jack’s on 10/5, bassist Justin Harris grinned at the crowd and laughed, “You guys are pretty drunk, huh?”  Suffice it to say that the inebriated crowd was adequately “warmed up” after a lackluster set from opener PVT and plenty of trips to the bar as they waited patiently for the rockers from Portland to hit the stage.  The wait proved more than worthy as drummer Danny Seim exploded into the opening drum fills of “Muscle’n Flo” and launched the band into a frenzy of sound that churned monstrously for the next 90 minutes.

Despite having released four critically acclaimed albums and consistently delivering an explosive live show, Menomena has managed to hang just under the radar since their inception more than ten years ago.  After the tour for 2010’s Mines, the end of Menomena seemed imminent when founding member Brent Knopf decided to leave the band due to creative differences.  Most bands usually suffer after losing 1/3 of their lineup, but Menomena is not most bands.   Their most recent release, Moms, includes some of the tightest arrangements and emotionally raw lyrics the band has ever recorded and their live show affirms the fact that this band is here to stay.

The two members of Menomena uniquely write and record their songs by looping individual instruments and building atop one another until an auditory landscape emerges that resembles a song from some other world.  With the addition of three touring musicians, these songs become entirely new creations in a live setting.  The energy onstage was high throughout the set, with the band encouraging the crowd to assist in the clapped intro to Moms opener “Plumage” and delivering loud, raucous renditions of songs new and old alike.  The band powered on through the set, barely giving the audience enough time to scream for more after each song.

With the exception of drummer Danny Seim, each musician played no less than three instruments throughout the night.  Justin Harris’ thick baritone sax lines punctured through the propulsive drums and hypnotic slide guitar to add extra weight to the band’s loudest songs, while gentle keyboard flourishes from touring member Paul Alcott added textures to the music that are barely audible on record.  As the band closed out the night with the one-two punch of “Rotten Hell” and “TAOS,” with every person in attendance shouting along with the band, I struggled to realize why this band was having trouble selling out a small venue like Jack’s.  They write great lyrics set to exciting, experimental music and consistently deliver one of the most powerful live shows around.  The answer to that question still eludes me, so in the meantime take a listen to Menomena’s new record and catch them next time they’re in town for their “drunk” fans down in the Crescent City.

Muscle n’ Flo
Plumage
