CONCERT RECAP: Delta Spirit plus Fidlar @ House of Blues – 10/31/12

Halloween night is something to worship here in New Orleans, as you all probably know, and this past Wednesday the local clergy and ghoulish patrons of the Crescent City Church were out with praise and glory in the forefront of their minds. The was certainly no exception, and the crowd gradually amassed for one of the most energetic shows of the year, headlined by the forceful Cali-rockers, .

I generally don’t have anything negative to say about bands who bestow upon me their live performances, even if the genre isn’t something I can relate to. But this time I just have to offer a little criticism for the opening band, Fidlar: Blink 182 is a thing of the past, and even with a small (barely-noticeable) twist on the feel of the music, Fidlar’s set was just too representative of a re-packaged 90’s grunge punk outfit, and while this can certainly be a basis upon which to formulate a new and original sound, in my honest and humble opinion, Fidlar simply lacked ingenuity. Art demands the artist, and that demand requires energy and creativity, it demands of the artist an abstract propulsion of originality, something to give the artist a “stand-out” presence. Maybe I’m just being cynical today (other than this criticism, however, everything is just peachy), but if you’re going to be the band to open up and prepare a venue’s patrons for someone as talented and interesting as Delta Spirit, you’ve got to have something more to offer than Fidlar’s offerings at the House of Blues. Now (sigh), onto bigger and better things.

Delta Spirit may be deemed a working component of several things, like indie rock, soul, americana, and a ton of other genre labels, but what they brought to the House of Blues on Wednesday was pure and simple – high energy, intoxicating waves of musical delight. Dressed the part in rock star vampire attire, singer/guitarist, Matthew Vasquez, and company took right to the heart of the night with performances of popular hits such as “Tear it Up,” plus a handful of other well-groomed, unique slayings of rock and roll such as “Empty House,” “White Table,” and “People C’mon.” Again, what’s amazing about these guys is their energy, which consistently gives rise to blessings of musical expression, the kind of display that could get a nation of Mumford and Sons groupies over the acoustic jam ballad hump. Basically, they have passion, and on Halloween night they were driven by that passion to deliver a thunderous set of songs to a crowd that should have certainly been bigger; nevertheless, those in attendance brought every bit of their Halloween vigor to the venue, and we basked in the electric cathedral of sound given to us by our “Transylvanian” leaders.
