CONCERT RECAP: Dum Dum Girls plus Devin and The Dropout @ One Eyed Jacks – 10/30/12
The crisp chill that came around the end of October served as a reminder that Halloween was just around the corner, and the Dum Dum Girls did their best to convey these same sentiments as they took to the stage in Nun costumes. One Eyed Jacks may have suffered a post Voodoo Fest hangover as the crowd was less than stellar and even docile, respectful, but by no means energetic.
The evening got kicked off with New Orleans natives, Babes, a three piece noise/fuzz pop/surf band. Halloween was in full force as Rhodes M. took to the stage in a Betty Page inspired one-piece, but far less flattering. Babes were entertaining and served well as an opener. After their set, Rhodes took a stage dive into an empty crowd, an exclamation point of sorts to the loud and ruckus set.
Next up, New York-based Devin took the stage as ZZ Top and launched into a ripping version of “Tush.” Antics aside, Devin blazed through a power-pop set that was the right mixture of humor and grit. They seemed very happy to be in New Orleans and the small crowd at hand thanked them in return.

The evening’s main event Dum Dum Girls took to the stage in procession, carrying candles, and wearing traditional nun habits. It was clear at this point that New Orleans and it’s Halloween spirits were in full force. Mirroring their costume’s sentiment, they opened with a cover of Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus.” The quartet’s bubblegum-pop has a genuine retro feel. The sounds are reminiscent of the 60’s girl groups, but differ vastly in their messages, no 60’s sensibilities here. There is timelessness about the music and it translates well to the stage, just not as “powerful” as the discs would let you believe. Their set was a great mixture of old and new material. The audience really didn’t care what they played as there wasn’t any real emotional outcries throughout the night. The main set ended with a Pale Saints cover, “Sight of You.”
Being a Halloween show, surprises are always possible and the Dum Dum Girls’ set didn’t disappoint. Instead of coming out and playing their encore, they enlisted the Dum Dum Guys, all dressed up in drag to cover one of their tracks. DeeDee came out after the song and said, “You don’t see that often.” They continued their encore with “Always Looking” and “Lord Knows,” which ended up becoming a giant party on stage. Devin and the Dum Dum Guys came out to finish the evening off. The band at a glance would seem to be having more fun than the audience. Not that the crowd didn’t enjoy the show, they did, it was just a sobering, hung-over, hazy event.
