CONCERT (sort of) RECAP: Exit Music and Nouvelle Orleans @ Circle Bar – 10/24/12

I was going through my albums for my Best of 2012 list and ran across a review of a show I did but somehow never got published. The fallout from the show was quite odd to say the least. So without further ado, here is my review and follow up to the Exitmusic show at The :

You ever get one of those odd premonitions that a show you are supposed to see is going to get cancelled? Many-a-Wednesday ago, Exitmusic’s show at the Circle Bar gave me one of those premonitions. Maybe it was because the band’s facebook page said the show was from 7:00 – 10:00, and the Circle Bar’s page said the show was at 10:00, when 10:00 was the actual time. Little did I know the confusions of time would be the least of our worries…

With a few days left before the show, the Circle Bar gave an all call-out to whoever wanted to open for Exitmusic. Answering the plea was , a two piece county-Cajun-folk band. Bartholomew Singer and Michelle Cunningham (aka Miss Mec) recently formed this somberly quirked duo of honest Americana music. Their music filled the tiny room and didn’t overpower it at all. Miss Mec played the banjo and sang while Bartholomew played guitar and sang, too. Their roots music certainly left us with warm fuzzies inside, much like the way Chris Lyons did at Hey! Cafe.

When the Exitmusic show was first announced, I took a step back in awe because I couldn’t believe one of my favorite artists of 2012 would be playing in one of the smallest venues of the city. Passage, Exitmusic’s latest release, will be in my top five of 2012 and will probably end up taking the top slot, so you can only imagine how stoked I was for this show. Well, I got to hear one track from that album and another from their EP, From Silence, before the band decided to cut their losses and stop playing altogether.

Aleksa Palladino and Devon Church have been touring as Exitmusic for close to six years now. The music is ethereal and ghostly, soul wrenching and heavenly. All their emotions are carried on their sleeves and are thoroughly expressed in the music. The Circle Bar’s sound system just wasn’t equipped for what was about to happen to it, an onslaught of layered beats, guitar, vocals, and keys. Devon proclaimed the sound wasn’t right and didn’t do justice to his wife’s beautiful voice. It did sound like it was coming through a megaphone, but as an audience member, I really didn’t care, she still sounded amazing.

This was Exitmusic’s first time ever playing New Orleans and needless to say it was memorable. Devon felt badly for leaving the stage in the way he did, but couldn’t push though the set because it wasn’t the vision of the band, nowhere near a true representation. I don’t fault the band; I just think prier communication with the venue may have been a way to avoid the mess, that way if the venue couldn’t give them what they needed sound wise, they could have then found another one. I look forward to seeing them again.

After the show was all said and done, I went to the band’s facebook page to see if anyone had anything to say about the show, and there was a post about Devon Church being a pre-Madonna and how it was un-cool that he walked out of the show. Devin in turn responded that this was his first time ever leaving a show and felt very bad about it. He also emphasized how important the music was and how not having his vision properly displayed didn’t do him or his wife justice. The comments have been purged from the site, as the person that initially posted the comment no longer follows the band. I also got word from Bartholomew, who has played the Circle Bar a few times since the incident, that they have upgraded the system. Guess I’ll have to go and check it out for myself.

The two songs I got were heavenly in my mind, but then again, I’m in love with the disc.

Setlist:
1. The Sea
2. The Modern Age

Here’s an unedited link to the show so you can judge for yourselves:

Informative article, but I can tell you walked a fine line and bit your tongue in hopes that the band will return to N.O. I gave a less fawning recap at http://blowtorchbaby.blogspot.com/2012/10/lake-falling-leaf-doesnt-know-where-it.html But to balance it out, I did offer several reasons why they might’ve been in a bad mood after a tough day. I personally would never go see them again, at least as a headliner, due to the guitarist trashing the Circle Bar’s dignity, but I guess I wouldn’t mind them returning so that people who have never seen them can do so.
