CONCERT RECAP: Milo Greene plus Cardinal Sons @ One Eyed Jacks – 6/7/13

Let’s take things into the warm crimson realm within the venerable ribcage of the New Orleans favorite, One Eyed Jacks, this past Friday night as L.A.-based folk-poppers, , came rumbling into town. Sharing the stage with them was local Nola outfit, , a southern-grown familial flock that’s been brewing a pink storm of their own lately.

A three-piece set of blood-borrowing brothers, Cardinal Sons started things off with a smooth taste of groove-inducing indie rock, consisting of a bit of rolling drums, some dynamo key and organ licks, a slick strumming guitar, and best of all, a powerful set of vocal harmonies pouring from each member at any given time. The set was a smooth ride for the senses from beginning to end, delivering blankets of rhythm and captivating swells of that endearing, folk-rooted Americana sort of sound. And I say folk, but their sound isn’t so much folk rock as it is a polished presentation of alternative rock that’s managed to tap into the sentimental poeticism akin to the timelessness of folk music, similar to something that might happen if James Mercer and Bob Dylan fell into a well with a bottle of bourbon and a few musical instruments. Anyway, whiskey and wells aside, these locals didn’t fail to impress, and I would only imagine their crowds will continue to grow (if you’ve missed the first bus, take this one – listen to their EP right HERE).

Next came the headlining Milo Greene, a five-piece Cali group whose most recent New Orleans visit was last year at Tips where they opened for Walkmen. Honestly, I hadn’t heard of them before that show, but after their opening set, I was convinced by the comforting pools of sound that these guys (and gal) would be around for a while. And hence their return to Toulouse street, where it was easy to sense a well-established comfort with their approach, hopping around from instrument to instrument and playing each with such ease that you might think the instruments were natural limbs.

The band has labeled their sound as “cinematic pop,” suggesting, perhaps, a story-esque lineage to their songs that intends to bring listeners on a voyage of sorts, an invitation to lose oneself in the repose of auditory artisanship. Consequently, the formula worked, as song after song the band managed to attract our inner senses, to hold mono y mono with the loose-footed ramblers within us and set sail. This sort of reaction was surely a testament to the band’s debut self-titled release, which has succeeded in maintaining quite an appeal.

Ultimately, the night served as a force of spritely commotion, coercing those of us in the crowd to let our souls dance. As always, we look forward to seeing these acts return to the stage, as one’s soul can never attend too many dance lessons.
