Following Stanton Moore Trio, Marco Benevento put on a 30-minute solo set last night at The Howlin’ Wolf New Orleans that may’ve stole the entire show. Folks were dumbfounded watching his meticulous, scientific methods and I happened to end up in a great spot to be able to snag some full-song videos. Continue below for Marco’s “Real Morning Party”, “Bennie And The Jets” (“so tasty”) and a extended, unique take on My Morning Jacket’s “Golden”. Read more…

After the insanely epic Saturday I had down at Jazz Fest, I was unsure of how well my stamina would keep with me at the hot and humid fairground day we had planned to see Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band close out the weekend on the main stage with a two and a half hour set. Sure enough, the energy of New Orleans took over and me and Jimmy from LMB NOLA raged the day pretty hard in the hot sun. By the time we made it into the bed the next morning, we had see amazing music from Dr. John, Iron and Wine, The Boss himself and some of our favorites in Worship My Organ (Robert Walter, Marco Benevento, Skerik and Adam Deitch). It was a pretty good day front to back. Read on for a few photos and videos I’ve found from the sets that day. Read more…

After a full day at Jazz Fest on Saturday and catching Gravity A’s first set at Le Bon Temps Roule, we regrouped one last time at home and strolled our way over to Tipitina’s to catch The Greyboy Allstars doing their MJ Tribute late night. The show was sold-out and definitely packed outside when we showed up, and the energy inside this show was just absolutely crazy all night. If there’s anything that drunk people love, it’s dancing to Michael Jackson songs. So Greyboy did not disappoint at all. Also Big Sam stopped by and blasted some horns with Karl Denson and Eddie Roberts (from the New Mastersounds) also stopped by and shredded his way through some fast funk. The show was killer but it eventually had to end with “Thriller” and “Billie Jean.” Read more…

Recap by Justin Ward (Live Music Blog editor)
Jazz Fest is officially well underway and we’ve now gone two days deep into the New Orleans swampy vibes. Today is one of those days that people will be talking about for a while with Bruce Springsteen headlining the fairgrounds with two and a half hours scheduled (with talks about him playing past curfew anyway). Should shape up to be an epic day. But for me, I need to recap where I’ve been so far and catch up a bit on my output over here. It’s a wonder how anyone gets any work done in this town. It’s just too fun. Read more…
Weekend 1 has been amazing thus far and perhaps even more jam-packed with late night goodness than ever with the addition of the Nolafunk Jazzfest Series and an embarrassment of live music riches on Friday and Saturday night. We’ve got a ton of coverage already up on the home page from Friday and a whole lot more on the way over the next couple of weeks so stay tuned for more. This post will be updated as more fan videos pop up on Youtube, but please don’t hesitate to send us a message on the contact page if you see something you think should be included here. Read more…
Review by John Stephens
The night began an anxious mystery, with the Mickey Hart Band coming on a bit later than planned (in grand NOLA style), leaving us patrons of Tipitina’s French Quarter to wonder how on earth the multitude of strange electronics, wires and boxes and amps, would be tamed by the oncoming masters of sound. Not to mention the leopard-skin trumpet, which, in all cases, points to primordial weirdness, to the harnessing of instinctual splendor. There were folk of all ages, those sincere, tie-dye veterans of the Dead era, and then plenty of youthful cadets curious and enthralled with the approaching performance of legendary magnitude. As the crowd amassed, a blissful, grey-haired lady came onto the venue floor, twirling and grinning and celebrating the delight of a timeless spirit – here, we left our ages at the door. Read more…
Last night, in continuation of a huge 2012 for STS9, the jam powerhouse threw an old school late night Jazz Fest party in the less-than-friendly confines of the Mardi Gras World River City Ballroom. Despite a restrictive, Big Brother-esque security/cops vibe and logistical difficulties entering the venue (it honestly started feeling like “The Line Ride“), the band overcame, putting on a varied, energetic and freewheeling display of psychedelia that allowed for some heavy group improv on some old favorites.
